News Roundup - Version stats, KML Editors, GooPs, Hey What's That?

  • Version stats - Barry Hunter at Nearby has updated his stats on the different versions of Google Earth which have downloaded his files. This gives you an idea of what versions of GE are still in use. [UPDATE 1300: new stats reflect Mac data properly - see comments.]
  • KML Editors - OgleEarth highlights the availability of two new KML editors.
  • GooPs - Probably the best software for tying a GPS to Google Earth in real-time is this freely available donation-ware called GooPs. GooPs just got a big boost because a review of GooPs was just featured at LifeHacker here.
  • Hey What's That? - I was going to write a story on this yesterday, but OgleEarth did a really nice review. Hey What's That? is a cool site that lets you generate a terrain panorama for any given spot (in the US only at this point). You can then view that panorama on their web site, and/or compare it to Google Earth views. The panorama views are annotated with Mountain names (many of which you can also view in GE by turning on the "Geographic Features" layer). It's definitely worth a look. Thanks to Michael Kosowsky for contacting me about it. Read the review.

    "Version stats":

why is it that for example my version: 4.0.2736, doesn't show up in his stats? i only see 4.0.2737 or the newer 4.0.2740... or doesn't he get traffic from mac's latest version??? very unlikely???

Well, I suppose it is possible that his server didn't have visitors from people who had that version. I don't think his stats come from a really high volume server. These aren't live stats, so if you didn't visit his site between the dates at the top of the stats...

Ah I see what happened, it turns out Mac (and Linux) use a different UserAgent - so my simplistic test for kh_* failed.

I've just run it again now this time including such useragents:
(Frank: I've included a link on the original page, but might be worth updating your post)
