News Roundup

Here is some news from various sources during the last few days:

  • Declan Butler of Nature Magazine last week reported on the release of some important GIS data from Columbia University regarding world-wide poverty. He created some Google Earth files showing the data, but the files were kind of large. He now reports he has created a network link which brings in the data much more elegantly as you zoom in to look at each country. Open the network link to try different sets of data.
  • Last week Google released a localized version of Google Maps for the Netherlands at maps.google.nl. OgleEarth reported that you can also get directions between specific addresses in the Netherlands inside Google Earth. He also noted that GE does not yet have the business listings for the Netherlands, but Google migrates the databases on different schedules. [UPDATE: Someone commented below that business listings now work in GE]
  • Newsweek has written a story on Why Aerial Mapping is Taking Off which does a good job of describing how Google Earth's population has expanded the world's view of the importance of aerial photography. Some people look at all this free aerial photography and assume it is killing the business of selling aerial photography. But, these aerial photographers are saying it is raising awareness of the need for even more current and better photography and provided new big customers (Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and other mapping providers).
  • Digital Geography reports on some new classroom projects done with Google Earth. If you are a teacher who has been thinking of using Google Earth in the class room, check out "Educational Uses for Google Earth".

    Frank:

Thought you'd be interested in this unbelievably data-rich Google Earth mash-up that FortiusOne is developing. I don't think they've released it yet, but their blog has some interesting visuals... http://blog.fortiusone.com.
